Mumbai Indians has been in the news even before the 2024 IPL auction. The team before the auctions decided to replace its long-time skipper Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya. As hinted by former Australia spinner Brad Hogg, Mumbai Indians added South African all-rounder Gerald Coetzee to its squad in the auction.

Gerald Coetzee will complement the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Jason Behrendorff in the bowling department. “They need a fast bowler, they have been boosted with an Indian all-rounder in Hardik Pandya. They still need someone to complement Bumrah and Behrendorff,” said Hogg.

Mumbai Indians (MI) also boosted their bowling squad for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 as they acquired the services of Sri Lanka left-arm quick Dilshan Madushanka for the Rs 4.6 crore in the IPL 2024 auction on Tuesday. Sri Lankan left-arm quick and the most expensive player in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) Dilshan Madushanka entered at the base price of 50 lakh. Earlier, Mumbai Indians had snapped up South African paceman Gerald Coetzee for Rs 5 crore.

Mumbai Indians also added all-rounder Shreyas Gopal to their squad for Rs 20 Lakh. Mumbai Indians have won IPL 5 times under Rohit Sharma, a feat only equalled by MS Dhoni-led CSK.

Mahela Jayawardene, the franchise's global head of performance, said that the addition of Gerald Coetzee and Dilshan Madushanka will provide more bowling options. One is a right-arm quick while another is left-arm quick and both are used to Indian conditions, he said.

"Playing out of the Wankhede in the blue-and-gold, bowling with Bumrah... I cannot wait," Gerald Coetzee said.
