The new player retention policy of IPL has put franchises in a tough spot this year. Just a month ahead of the IPL auction, teams have had to do a balancing act between their salary cap and player retention.

Each team is allowed to retain up to five players but doing so takes away a significant chunk, almost Rs 39 crore, from their total player budget. They do, however, have the option of the Joker card.



THE JOKER CARD

Each team will have the option to match the highest bid in the auction for any of its 2013 squad players that it had not retained The number of “rights to match” available to a team is based on how many it has retained already

If a team has retained 3-5 players, it will have 1 “rights to match”

If a team has not retained any player, it will have 3 “rights to match”
