Mumbai Indians were the only team to bid for South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock, securing him for his base price of ₹1 crore in the IPL 2026 auction. The 32-year-old, a seasoned IPL campaigner who has represented six franchises, was released by Kolkata Knight Riders this year after scoring just 152 runs in eight matches.

Mumbai’s move highlights a clear strategy: adding a player who can open the innings or accelerate scoring in the middle order when needed. De Kock is one of those rare talents capable of shifting the tempo of a game within a few overs, and his recent form only strengthened his appeal.

In the ongoing India–South Africa T20I series, de Kock showcased his firepower with a blistering 90 off 46 balls in the second match, reaffirming his ability to change games quickly.

De Kock offers Mumbai flexibility at the top of the order and the ability to accelerate later in the innings if given consistent opportunities.

One of the most destructive openers in world cricket, he has scored over 3,300 IPL runs at a strike rate of 134, including two centuries -- highlighted by an unbeaten 140 for Lucknow Super Giants against KKR in 2022 -- and 24 half-centuries. Behind the stumps, he has accounted for 73 catches and 16 stumpings.
