Mumbai Indians will host Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match for both teams in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, with MI entering as clear favourites while KKR grapple with multiple injury setbacks in their pace attack.

Mumbai Indians head into the contest with a formidable squad on paper, bolstered by key additions such as Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur and Quinton de Kock. With a star-studded batting line-up and a bowling unit led by Jasprit Bumrah, MI appear well-balanced across departments.

The team had finished third last season and will aim to go further this year. Captain Hardik Pandya will also be under focus as Mumbai look to end their five-year wait for an IPL title.

Weather conditions in Mumbai are expected to be favourable for cricket, with temperatures in the mid-to-late 20 degree Celsius range. The sky is likely to remain clear, with humidity around 68%.

Wankhede pitch report

The Wankhede Stadium pitch is expected to favour batters. In the last match played here, England nearly chased down a target of 255 against India in the T20 World Cup semifinal, indicating a high-scoring surface for this fixture as well.

KKR hit by injury concerns

Kolkata Knight Riders, who came into the 2025 season as defending champions but finished among the bottom sides, have been dealt a major blow ahead of IPL 2026. Pacers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep are ruled out for the season, while Matheesha Pathirana is yet to join the squad as he recovers from injury.

The absence of key fast bowlers leaves a significant gap in their pace attack, with Blessing Muzarabani coming in as a partial replacement.

New-look batting and spin strength for KKR

KKR’s batting line-up is expected to feature changes, with New Zealand opener Finn Allen likely to open. Cameron Green’s role will be closely watched as the franchise views him as a long-term option to fill the void left by Andre Russell in the future.

Their spin department remains a strong suit, with Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy forming a potent combination.
