Gujarat Titans begin the 2026 Indian Premier League season with a settled core but important decisions at the mini‑auction that could define whether they return to the summit.

After a strong 2025 campaign in which GT finished third in the league and reached the playoffs, the franchise has opted for continuity while trimming squad spots to sharpen balance. With a purse of about ₹12.9 crore and only five slots left to fill, the upcoming auction in Abu Dhabi is less about overhaul and more about targeted upgrades to complement a title‑contending unit.

Founded in 2021 and coached by Ashish Nehra, GT burst onto the IPL scene by winning the title in their debut season of 2022. They have since remained among the more consistent sides in the league, blending young Indian batting talent with match‑winning overseas stars. The 2025 season again saw a competitive performance, although the side stumbled at the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians, showing areas where reinforcements could be decisive.

Retained core and stability
Ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, Gujarat Titans chose to retain a large chunk of their squad, signalling faith in the nucleus that has delivered steady results. Captain Shubman Gill, a top performer throughout the 2025 season with over 650 runs at a high strike rate, leads from the front and remains the franchise’s linchpin. Alongside him, Rashid Khan continues to anchor the bowling attack, while Sai Sudharsan provides explosive batting options at the top.

Other key retained players include international match‑winners such as Jos Buttler and Kagiso Rabada, as well as Indian staples like Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and utility all‑rounders Washington Sundar and Rahul Tewatia. This group gives GT balance across departments and underlines the franchise’s strategy of backing proven performers rather than frequent rotation.

Releases and auction strategy
While GT kept its core intact, there were some notable releases intended to free up purse and squad balance. The franchise let go of Gerald Coetzee, Mahipal Lomror, Dasun Shanaka, Karim Janat and Kulwant Khejroliya. GT also traded away Sherfane Rutherford to Mumbai Indians, creating a gap in the middle order that needs addressing.

The Titans enter the mini‑auction with a limited ₹12.9 crore purse and only five slots remaining, including four overseas slots. With such constraints, their strategy is expected to be precise rather than expansive. They cannot chase big marquee names in large bidding wars but will rather look to fill specific roles that enhance their existing combinations.

Given their remaining overseas slots, GT will likely prioritise specialists who can slot straight into the first XI — a finisher, strike bowler or power‑hitter who offers immediate tactical value. With only limited funds, every overseas pick must justify a key role on matchdays.

Gujarat Titans’ position heading into IPL 2026 shows a confident franchise in its structure but mindful of the fine margins that decide T20 tournaments. Unlike teams forced into radical rebuilds, GT’s challenge is one of enhancement, not transformation.
