Indians drove most conversations around Olympics between July 23-August 8: Facebook

American gymnast Simone Biles was the most mentioned athlete over the course of the games globally on Facebook, followed by Indian track and field athlete Neeraj Chopra who won India's first gold.

India was the 'loudest' country on Facebook, in terms of the number of people engaging in conversations on Olympics during the course of the games between July 23-August 8, followed by the US and Brazil, and track and field was the most mentioned sport on the platform, Facebook said on Monday, sharing some statistics linked to the world's biggest sporting event.

American gymnast Simone Biles was the most mentioned athlete over the course of the games globally on Facebook, followed by Indian track and field athlete Neeraj Chopra who won India's first gold.

India won seven medals in its highest ever Olympics tally at the just concluded Tokyo Olympics.


August 7, the day Chopra and the US Basketball team won gold was the day that drew the maximum number of conversations on the games on Facebook.

Facebook said on its photo and video sharing app Instagram, athletes drove more than 410 million interactions over the course of the games and gained more than 75 million followers. Indian athletes Neeraj Chopra, PV Sindhu and MC Mary Kom gained the maximum number of followers since the start of the games.

Chopra gained 2.6 million new followers and was the most mentioned athlete over the course of the games globally.

Brazilian skater Rayssa Leal gained 5.8 million followers over the course of the games on Instagram, the highest in the world. At 18.44 million, she also drove most interactions on Instagram during the games globally. The video of her skateboarding journey was the most-liked video from an athlete over the course of the games, with more than 11 million views.

Gymnastics, rowing, boxing and swimming were some of the other top mentioned sports on Facebook. Philippines and Mexico followed India, the US and Brazil in terms of the countries driving conversations on Olympics on Facebook.
