After a gut-wrenching 3-2 defeat against Germany, the Indian hockey team will face Spain for the bronze medal match at the Paris Olympics, keeping alive its hopes for a podium finish.

Their 44-years-old hunt for a gold medal continues as the Indian men failed to qualify for the ultimate game.

India, at Olympics, has 8 gold medals in hockey, one silver and three bronze. At the 2024 Games, the boys will look to repeat Tokyo Olympics-like game and finish third.


Harmanpreet Singh-led team got off to a solid start against Germany and through a series of penalty corners. The skipper himself successfully converted the fourth penalty corner in the 7th minute, giving India an early lead and marking his eighth goal of the tournament.

Both teams increased their attacking efforts, but despite their best attempts, the third quarter ended with a 2-2 tie.

Undeterred, Germany maintained their relentless pressure and finally broke through in the 54th minute when Marco Miltkau scored with an assist from Teo Hinrichs on the left flank. This decisive goal secured Germany’s 3-2 victory and their spot in the final.

The two nations have had 10 encounters at the Olympics, of which the Tokyo bronze medalists, India, have won 7, while Spain has emerged victorious only in 1. Two matches yielded a draw.

In the last five meetings too, India have an edge over the Spanish team with a 4-1 record.
