India vs England Test Playing 11: Bumrah's replacement announced; Shubman Gill makes three changes to his side

India have named their playing XI for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, confirming that star pacer Jasprit Bumrah will be rested as part of workload management.

The team, led by Shubman Gill, features three major changes from the side that lost the series opener at Headingley. The hosts have won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Alongside Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep comes in to replace Bumrah in the attack. The team has brought in Nitish Kumar Reddy, against Sai Sudharsan, while Karun Nair retains his place. Left-arm spinner Washington Sundar joins Ravindra Jadeja to offer spin and all-round options in place of Shardul Thakur.


Speaking ahead of the match, captain Shubman Gill explained the selection call: “Jasprit Bumrah is now playing just to manage his workload. Third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch so we'll use him there. We were tempted to play Kuldeep, but decided to add some depth to the batting.”

India trail 0-1 in the five-Test series and will be aiming to level the contest at Edgbaston, a venue known for offering early assistance to fast bowlers. With overcast conditions expected on Day 1 and signs of turn on Day 5, the match is set for a tactical showdown.

Bumrah is expected to return for the third Test at Lord’s, where conditions are likely to be more conducive to his style of bowling.
