Australia's last pair of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood put on a spirited partnership of runs 25 runs off 110 balls to reduce India's lead.
Starc top scored for the hosts with 26 runs off 112 balls, while wicket-keeper Alex Carey scored 21 runs.
