India's Yashasvi Jaiswal bats during play on the second day of the fourth cricket test between Australia and India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young Indian opening batter, is making a strong impression in the ongoing fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The 22-year-old left-hander scored 82 runs off 118 balls and will be eager to comeback stronger in the next innings to help India keep their hopes alive of winning the Boxing Day Test for the third series in a row.

In a remarkable feat on December 27, Jaiswal surpassed Virat Kohli in an elite list of Indian batters for the most Test runs in a calendar year.

By crossing the 11-run mark in the second session of the second day’s play, Jaiswal pushed Kohli's 1322 Test runs from 2018 out of the top spot. Jaiswal, who debuted in Test cricket in July 2023 against the West Indies, has now accumulated over 1350 runs in just 15 Tests in 2024, including a standout 161-run knock in the Perth Test against Australia.

This remarkable achievement places Jaiswal just behind legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Sunil Gavaskar, Gundappa Viswanath, and Rahul Dravid in the list of Indian batters with the most Test runs in a calendar year.

Tendulkar leads the pack with a record 1562 runs in 2010, which came in 14 Tests. If Jaiswal manages to add just seven more runs in the ongoing match, he will surpass Rahul Dravid’s 1357 runs in 2002.

Currently ranked No. 5 in the ICC Test batter's rankings, Jaiswal needs 257 more runs in the ongoing match to surpass Joe Root’s 1556 runs and become the top run-scorer in Test cricket for 2024.

The overall record for the most Test runs in a calendar year belongs to former Pakistani batter Mohammad Yousuf, who scored 1788 runs in 11 matches in 2006. Along with Yousuf, only Viv Richards (1710 runs) and Joe Root (1708 runs) have crossed the 1700-run mark in a calendar year in Test cricket.
