In a first, MS Dhoni will have a different role in an IPL final

Since the inception of this tournament, Mahendra Singh Dhoni can be safely regarded as one of the main figures behind the astounding popularity of the tournament.

Dhoni enjoyed a cult following among Chennai Super Kings fans and his leadership was a pivotal factor behind the team's success on the field.

But luck has a very uncanny knack of changing sides and Dhoni's removal as captain of Rising Pune Supergiant, which has been greeted with jibes on social media in addition to doubts over his finishing abilities, is an indicator of the changing times.

He is no longer the one calling the shots on the field but in this edition, he has shown that he still retains the gumption to fight and shoulder responsibilities as a senior pro.

Former captain Mohammad Azharuddin has in fact stated that Dhoni's form will be crucial to Pune's fortunes in the final.

"Dhoni has always won as captain. Now he may want to win as a player. Once you are not a captain, you move on. I was not in favour of his sacking. Smith and Dhoni have shown they share a good rapport. They have gelled well and results have shwon that," Azharuddin said.

On Sunday evening, Dhoni's fans will be hoping that the vintage Mahi will once again be there at the end to steer his team home. But not everytime summit clashes have thrown up fairytale finish. Have they?
