ICC World Cup: India steamroll Sri Lanka by 302 runs to storm into semis
In ICC World Cup match, Sri Lanka suffered a heavy defeat by 302 runs against India, leading to India's qualification for the semi-finals. Sri Lanka was unable to put up much of a fight and was dismissed for just 55 runs in 19.4 overs.
Sri Lanka was no match for the men in blue and was all out for 55 runs in 19.4 overs. With this victory India also knocked out the Lankans out of the showpiece event.
Chasing a huge target of 358, Sri Lanka suffered a disastrous start to their chase. The first three batsmen failed to score any runs, with both openers falling for golden ducks. Kasun Rajitha top-scored for Sri Lanka with 14. Only two other Sri Lanka batters, Angelo Mathews (12) and Maheesh Theekshana (12 not out) managed to reach double digits.
Pathum Nissanka was lbw to Jasprit Bumrah's first ball of the innings, a decision upheld on umpire's call after a Sri Lanka review.
Bumrah bowled two wides to give Sri Lanka their first runs, but at the start of the next over Mohammed Siraj had Dimuth Karunaratne, the other opening batsman, lbw for nought as well. Shami who took five wickets is now the joint-highest wicket-taker for India in World Cups.
Number four Sadeera Samarawickrama survived four balls before he too was out for a duck, edging Siraj to third slip Shreyas Iyer.
Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis was then bowled for one by Siraj to leave his side three for four in the fourth over.
In the first innings Virat Kohli led with 88 runs from 94 balls, followed by Shubman Gill with 92 runs off 92 balls, and Shreyas Iyer contributed significantly with 82 runs from 56 balls for the Indian side.
Ravindra Jadeja's 35 off 24 balls pushed India past 350.
Left-arm pacer Dilshan Madhushanka was the stand out bowler for Sri Lanka ending with figures of five for 80 in 10 overs.
