ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 records biggest-ever opening weekend

The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 has made a record-breaking start, with attendance, viewership and digital engagement figures reaching new highs during the opening weekend of the tournament.

A total of 44,844 spectators attended matches across the first three days in Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton, setting a new attendance record for the opening weekend of an ICC women's event.

The figure surpassed the 34,680 fans who attended the opening three days of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup last year, highlighting growing interest in the women's game.

The weekend was headlined by the India-Pakistan clash at Edgbaston, which attracted a sell-out crowd of 18,814. According to the ICC, it was the highest-attended group-stage match in Women's World Cup history, surpassing the previous record of 15,935 set during the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 in Dubai.

The tournament has also generated strong broadcast and digital numbers. In India, JioStar's coverage on JioHotstar has delivered a cumulative live reach of 215 million viewers and 1.3 billion minutes of live watch time so far.

India's victory over Pakistan accounted for 134 million viewers and 1.1 billion minutes of watch time, making it the highest digital reach for any league-stage match across all formats in women's cricket.

The India-Pakistan fixture followed a successful opening night in Birmingham, where 14,865 spectators watched hosts England defeat Sri Lanka after a pre-match performance by the West End production of Wicked.

In the United Kingdom, Sky Sports reported a peak audience of 510,000 viewers and an average audience of 393,000 for the opening match between England and Sri Lanka. The broadcaster said it was the highest average audience for a single game at an ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

The ICC also reported significant growth across its digital platforms. More than 753 million video views have been recorded across ICC social media content, representing a near 150 per cent increase compared with the same stage of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024.

The ICC's Content Creator Programme has generated more than 617 million video views and over 30 million engagements, with content creators producing tournament-related coverage from across the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, ICC. tv recorded a 75 per cent increase in both unique users and total watch time. Through a partnership with YouTube, the ICC said more than 150,000 hours of watch time have been generated on its channel.

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said the strong start reflected extensive planning and collaboration between the ICC, the England and Wales Cricket Board, broadcast partners and other stakeholders.

"This record-breaking start is a powerful reflection of the months of planning, collaboration and commitment from the ICC, the ECB, our broadcast partners and every stakeholder involved in delivering this event," Gupta said.

He added that the tournament's early success demonstrated the growing strength of women's cricket and expressed confidence that the event would continue to attract new fans and inspire future generations.

The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 continues across England and Wales, with fans able to attend matches through ticket sales and follow the tournament through global broadcast partners and ICC digital platforms.
