Horse racing-Arrogate wins $12 million World Cup Invitational

Jan 28 ( Reuters) - Favourite Arrogate won the world's richest race, the $12 million World Cup Invitational, in emphatic fashion as California Chrome ended his career on a disappointing note in Florida on Saturday.

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith piloted four-year-old colt Arrogate into the lead around the final turn and he pulled away down the straight to win by three-and-a-half lengths.

Arrogate covered the 1 1/8-mile (1810 metres) distance at Gulfstream Park to secure the $7 million first prize in an unofficial time of 1 minute, 47.61 seconds.

Shaman Ghost finished second, with Neolithic battling home third.

California Chrome, meanwhile, faded down the stretch in the final race of a storied career that included victories at the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and the 2016 Dubai World Cup.
