'Forgot Mankading' Jos Butler in 2014? Netizens point out to Angelo Mathews amid 'timed out row
Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka made history as the first cricketer in international cricket to be "timed out" during a World Cup match against Bangladesh. Mathews criticized the appeal by Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan as "disgraceful," but some pointe...

In that match, Sri Lankan spinner Sachithra Senanayake was involved in rare instance of 'Mankading' in the international game. Buttler, who was on the non-striking end, had backed up too far and was out of his crease. Of course, Senanayake had warned Butler in the previous over clearly would remove the bails and run him out if he was out of the crease again.
After the match, speaking about Jos Butler dismissal, England skipper Alstair Cook said: "It was very disappointing. Ask Angelo." Angelo Mathews had refused to withdraw an appeal against Jos Buttler.
"I would have sympathised with Angelo Mathews if he had withdrawn 'Mankading' appeal against Jos Buttler in 2014. Yes, he was the captain of Sri Lanka then.. If 'Mankading' was within the law, so is 'Timed Out'. What you sow is what you reap," said an user on social media platform X.
"Forgot Mankading 2014? Where was the spirit of cricket? First you learn politeness. Then teach others politeness," pointed out another user.
Bangladesh skipper Shakib defended his decision in his post-match press conference, saying his actions were within the rules and he had no regrets.
Shakib got support from former England captain Michael Vaughan. "Yes, Shakib is going to get loads of people, particularly on social media, saying he broke the spirit of the game, he's a disgrace," he told Cricbuzz.
"He's well within his rights, it's the laws of the game. It's utter nonsense talking about the spirit of the game, the umpire's got it right."
However, many former cricketers had plenty of support for Mathews. Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn said that the incident "wasn't cool". Australia's Usman Khawaja called it "ridiculous", and former India captain Gautam Gambhir branding it "pathetic".
"I didn't enjoy what I saw out there," Pakistan great Waqar Younis said in a TV broadcast.
