Euros: England down Denmark to set up final showdown with Italy on Sunday

The Three Lions, under the leadership of Gareth Southgate, have reached a tournament final after 55 years of waiting. After a slow start to their campaign, the Brits amped up their performances, keeping five clean sheets on their way to the final.

England’s opponents this Sunday - Italy - have themselves been through a similar trajectory, returning to a major tournament after missing the 2018 World Cup, only the second time they failed to qualify in their history.

English fans broke out in raucous celebrations after their team made it to a major final after half a decade and matched their best run ever from 1966. Fans were treated to a rollercoaster of emotions in the semi-final against Denmark with the game only won during extra time.

England triumphed over a resurgent Denmark team - who lost arguably their best player, Christian Eriksen, after he had a heart attack during their first game of the tournament - that broke England’s 720 minute record of not conceding a goal.

Italy made it to the final the hard way, battling Spain and Belgium. Roberto Mancini’s team began the tournament as underdogs but have now reset expectations for the final showdown of the tournament.
