Since the inception of the Indian Premier League in 2008, Delhi Daredevils—later Delhi Capitals—have remained one of the league’s most competitive yet underachieving sides, consistently producing strong squads but falling short of a title.

In the early years, Delhi emerged as a formidable unit, reaching the semi-finals in 2008 and 2009 and finishing at the top of the points table in 2009. Despite boasting a star-studded lineup featuring players like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and AB de Villiers, the team failed to convert early dominance into a title.

The franchise then endured a prolonged slump between 2012 and 2017, finishing near the bottom of the table in multiple seasons and struggling with frequent leadership and squad changes.

A turnaround began in 2018 following a management reset and rebranding to Delhi Capitals. With a renewed focus on young Indian talent and overseas specialists, the team returned to the playoffs in 2019, signalling a shift towards greater consistency.

The 2020 season marked the franchise’s best-ever performance, as Delhi reached their maiden IPL final under captain Shreyas Iyer. However, they finished runners-up, extending their wait for a first title.

Delhi remained competitive in subsequent seasons, making the playoffs again in 2021, but have since struggled to maintain that level of performance consistently. In IPL 2025, the team registered a strong start but failed to qualify for the playoffs, highlighting ongoing issues with sustaining momentum across a full season.

Across its IPL history, the franchise has been known for identifying and backing emerging players, with names like Rishabh Pant and Kagiso Rabada playing key roles in its resurgence phase.

Despite multiple rebuilds and phases of competitiveness, Delhi Capitals remain one of the original IPL franchises yet to win the title, with their 2020 runner-up finish continuing to be their closest attempt.

The team’s record reflects a mix of early promise, mid-cycle decline, and recent resurgence—placing it among the more consistent playoff contenders in recent years, but still short of championship success.

The current phase of Delhi Capitals revolves around a mix of experienced internationals and Indian core players, led by captain Axar Patel, who remains central to the team’s batting and tactical approach.

The side has leaned on senior players such for stability at the top, while all-round depth and pace options have been bolstered through a rotating overseas contingent. Young Indian players continue to form a key pillar of the squad, reflecting the franchise’s long-standing strategy of backing emerging talent, even as it looks to strike a balance between experience and youth to mount a sustained title challenge.
