WTC Points Table update after IND vs SL: India beat Sri Lanka by 165 runs, remain fifth; Australia lead

India have got their World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign back on track with a 165-run win over Sri Lanka in Galle. The victory keeps India fifth in the WTC standings, with five wins from 10 Tests and a points percentage of 53.33. With two Tests against New Zealand and five against Australia still to come, India now face a demanding second half of the campaign.

The win came at an important stage for India, who had entered the Sri Lanka series after a 0-2 home defeat to South Africa. The two-time WTC runners-up needed a strong start in Sri Lanka to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 final alive.

India delivered in Galle, with Devdutt Padikkal scoring a century and Manav Suthar leading the bowling effort as India secured a 165-run victory.

India's next challenge is the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. After that, the team travels to New Zealand for a two-Test series before returning home for a five-Test series against Australia.

WTC points table: Where India stand

Australia continue to lead the WTC 2025-27 standings with seven wins from nine Tests and a points percentage of 77.78. South Africa are second at 75%, followed by New Zealand at 72.22% and Bangladesh at 66.67%.

India are fifth with a 53.33% points percentage.

Sri Lanka are sixth with a 33.33% points percentage after winning just one of their five Tests.

India vs Sri Lanka: What the Galle win means

The victory is more important for India than simply adding another win to their record.

India had already lost four of their first nine Tests in the cycle, including the 0-2 series defeat to South Africa at home. That left little room for further slip-ups.

The Galle victory gives India momentum going into the second Test. A series win in Sri Lanka would give them another opportunity to improve their position before the tougher assignments ahead.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have slipped to sixth. They began the cycle with a series win over Bangladesh but subsequently lost their away series against West Indies and have now lost to India in Galle.

The Colombo Test is therefore important for both sides, although their WTC situations are very different. Sri Lanka need a major turnaround, while India are trying to close the gap on the teams above them.

India's WTC road ahead

The biggest challenge for India comes after Sri Lanka.

India have two Tests in New Zealand followed by a five-Test home series against Australia. Those seven matches could have a major bearing on India's chances of making the WTC final.

The New Zealand series will test India away from home, while the Australia series gives them a long home campaign in which to collect points.

Australia currently sit at the top of the table and also have a five-Test series against India remaining. That makes the contest particularly significant for the WTC standings.

India's leading run-scorer in the current cycle is Shubman Gill with 974 runs, while Mohammed Siraj leads the bowling charts for the team with 41 wickets.

Can India still reach the WTC final?

Yes, but the margin for error is shrinking.

India's 53.33% points percentage puts them behind the current top four. The top two teams at the end of the WTC league stage will qualify for the 2027 final.

The immediate target will be to finish the Sri Lanka series strongly before taking on New Zealand away. The five-Test Australia series could then become the defining stretch of India's campaign.

For India, the equation is simple: more wins, fewer slip-ups and a strong finish against Australia. The 165-run victory in Galle is a step in that direction, but the toughest part of the road to the WTC final is still ahead.
