Five franchises will participate in a mini-auction to address their squad needs within a limited budget.
The mini-auction ahead of the 2027 season has a total of 146 short-listed players, which also includes 27 overseas cricketers. However, there is a limited chance to land a contract because there are only 20 slots available for domestic players and just seven for overseas.
The squeeze in wallets offers a stark comparison to the Rs 40.8 crore spent at the November 2025 mega-auction ahead of the 2026 season.
UP Warriorz have the most room to manoeuvre
UP Warriorz come to the auction with the largest remaining wallet of Rs 3.75 crore and eight vacancies. They also can have three overseas players. That gives the team, captained by Meg Lanning, the best financial flexibility among all.Gujrat Giants have Rs 1.25 crore left and three vacancies, including one slot for an overseas player. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have Rs 1.15 crore with five available places and two slots for overseas recruits. Delhi Capitals have Rs 1.10 crore for five vacancies, with one available overseas slot.
Mumbai Indians are facing the tightest constraint, with Rs 90 lakh remaining for six vacancies and no available overseas slot. Their budget allocation becomes particularly important as their recruitment will remain restricted to Indian players.
Limited slots could shape bidding
Franchises also need to look beyond finding players at the lowest price. They need to address specific squad gaps. Teams may need to compare experienced international players against domestic ones, while all-rounders can offer more flexibility in a limited squad and budget. The base-price is also another space which shows us the competition for contracts. Australia's Sophie Molineux and England's Sophia Dunkley are the only two players who have top base-price of Rs 50 lakh each. 106 players have entered at Rs 10 lakh while four players have set the base price at Rs 40 lakh, 30 players at Rs 30 lakh and four at Rs 20 lakh.
Franchises will need to prioritise to fill essential roles without further squeezing their purses. The limited number of vacancies means not every shortlisted player will get a team.
The auction will determine how effectively teams can use their remaining funds to strengthen their squads before the fifth WPL season, scheduled to run from January 14 to February 7, 2027. With most of their cores already retained, the outcome will offer a glimpse of how franchises are prioritising squad depth, specialist skills and emerging talent under tighter spending constraints.
