India will begin their five-match T20I series against England on Wednesday under pressure to arrest a slide in form, with much of the attention centred on whether 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi finally gets his international debut.

The visitors head into the series after a 0-2 defeat to Ireland, where their batting struggled on seamer-friendly pitches. Those performances have intensified calls for Sooryavanshi's inclusion, although the team management has maintained that the teenager will have to earn his place.

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said ahead of the series that Sooryavanshi would have to "go through the process and bide his time" like every other player, while adding that the young batter appears ready for international cricket.

Whether India stick to that approach remains to be seen after the disappointing Ireland series.

Sanju Samson's twin failures at the top of the order have fuelled speculation that India could hand Sooryavanshi an opening role alongside Abhishek Sharma, who retained some confidence with a brisk 49 off 20 balls in the opening T20I against Ireland. Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan also endured a lean series, scoring just 1 and 12, giving the selectors another possible opening if they choose to reshuffle the batting order.

The management, however, will also weigh the impact such a decision could have on the confidence of the player left out. Samson, after all, enjoyed a productive run in the latter stages of the T20 World Cup earlier this year and also scored two centuries for Chennai Super Kings during the IPL.

Even so, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have shown in the past that they are willing to make tough selection calls. Against Ireland, India handed debuts to Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav, while Sooryavanshi was made to wait.

While the teenager's inclusion would add excitement, it is unlikely to be a complete solution to India's batting concerns.

The batters found conditions in Belfast difficult, struggling to adapt once the Irish seamers exploited helpful surfaces. India appeared uncomfortable against disciplined bowling and failed to adjust their approach while chasing totals of 183 and 155.

Tilak Varma's patient half-century in the second T20I briefly suggested a way forward, but even he eventually fell after trying to accelerate following a measured innings. The inability of several batters to adapt to demanding conditions emerged as one of India's biggest concerns.

England are expected to present an even sterner challenge with a pace attack featuring Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Saqib Mahmood and Sonny Baker, while Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed provide quality spin options.

Conditions at the Riverside Ground are also expected to favour the bowlers. Across eight men's T20Is played at the venue, the average first-innings score is 138, with the highest total being 195.

India's new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer will therefore be hoping for a much-improved batting display as the visitors look to avoid a second successive series defeat.

England's batting unit, led by captain Harry Brook, also boasts significant firepower with Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Jacob Bethell, Jordan Cox and Tom Banton capable of punishing any lapses.

India's bowlers, despite making early inroads against Ireland, allowed the hosts to rebuild through the middle overs in both matches. The visitors will also expect greater returns from their spin attack, with Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Suryansh Shedge yet to make a significant impact.

The first T20I begins at 10 pm IST.
