Shubman Gill’s 223 powers India to record 406-run chase, series triumph

Shubman Gill's unbeaten 223 powered India to their highest successful ODI chase as they beat the West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI at the ACA Stadium on Wednesday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Chasing a daunting target of 406, India reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs, completing only the second successful chase of a 400-plus target in men's ODI cricket.

Gill's double century also made him only the second batter to score an ODI double hundred while chasing, after Australia's Glenn Maxwell achieved the feat against Afghanistan.

The India captain led from the front, smashing 223 not out off 133 balls, with 26 fours and eight sixes. His innings came at a strike rate of nearly 168 and turned what appeared to be a mammoth chase into a comfortable victory.

The only other successful chase of a 400-plus total came in the famous 2006 ODI between South Africa and Australia, when South Africa chased down 435 in Johannesburg.

India's victory also surpassed their previous highest successful ODI chase, underlining the scale of their batting performance in Guwahati.

The West Indies had posted 405 earlier in the innings, setting India a target that required more than eight runs an over. But India hardly showed signs of panic, maintaining their belief and steadily taking control of the chase.

Gill's innings came after he had already established himself as the No. 1 ODI batter. The captain continued his remarkable run with an innings that combined aggressive strokeplay with control throughout the chase.

Rohit joins 12,000-run club

Earlier, Rohit became only the seventh batter and the third Indian to cross 12,000 runs in ODI cricket.

The 39-year-old reached the landmark in his 291st ODI, while also completing his 35th century in the format off just 72 balls.

Rohit's century included 10 fours and six sixes and was his second hundred in three matches at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

Rohit, who now plays only ODI cricket with next year's World Cup in sight, has 62 half-centuries in the format and averages nearly 50.

He joined Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli as the only other Indians to cross 12,000 ODI runs. Kohli reached 15,000 runs in the opening match of the series in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.
