WPL 2027 uncapped gems: Domestic performers eye India women’s T20 break
Several domestic players are showcasing impressive performances in India's women's T20 cricket, aiming for national selection. Humairaa Kaazi scored 92 runs against Jharkhand, reinforcing her case for a spot on the team. Meanwhile, Vrinda Dinesh a...

Her knock came as the 2026-27 Senior Women's T20 Trophy got underway, giving selectors another chance to assess players who impressed last season. With Smriti Mandhana taking over India's white-ball captaincy earlier this month, the competition could assume greater importance as the team looks to rebuild after its disappointing T20 World Cup campaign.
Kaazi has already made a strong case. According to CricketArchive's 2025-26 tournament statistics, she scored 320 runs in nine matches at an average of 35.55 and a strike rate of 131.14. Yet, inexplicably she went unsold at the WPL auction, according to a The Times of India report. The national selectors, however, gave her an opportunity with India A for the Rising Stars Asia Cup.
Karnataka's Vrinda Dinesh is another name worth watching. She accumulated 316 runs in nine matches, averaging 39.50 at a strike rate of 142.98. Her unbeaten 118 showed her ability to play a long innings without sacrificing scoring pace.
Vrinda has since remained in the national selection picture, featuring in the India A squad against Australia A in September. The senior India call-up, though, is still awaited.
Haryana teenager Deeya Yadav has taken a different route. According to a The Times of India report, she scored 298 runs in eight innings at an average of nearly 60 in last season's domestic T20 competition. She followed it up with 151 runs at a strike rate of 149.5 in the inter-zonal tournament.
Her performances earned her a Rs 10 lakh Delhi Capitals contract in the WPL. She subsequently became the youngest player to debut in the WPL, aged 16 years and 103 days.
The bowling department has contenders too. Karnataka left-arm spinner Sahana Pawar, who represented South Zone in the inter-zonal competition, remained unsold at the WPL auction, according to a TOI report. Meanwhile, the new domestic season has begun with notable performances from Haryana's Sheetal Rana and Delhi's Amisha Bahukhandi, who claimed five and six wickets respectively on October 26, according to BCCI match records and scorecards.
The need for fresh options was underlined by India head coach Amol Muzumdar following the team's World Cup exit in June.
"We really need to put our heads around what combinations we are going to play," Muzumdar told reporters at Lord's after India's defeat to Australia on June 28, according to a PTI report. He also flagged concerns over India's bowling and fielding.
Former chief selector Neetu David believes the groundwork must begin at the domestic level. In an August interview with PTI, David stressed the need to develop power-hitting skills in state cricket, arguing that India cannot expect attacking batters to emerge without that preparation.
For the uncapped players, the challenge now is to turn promising numbers into sustained performances. A productive domestic season may not guarantee an India jersey, but it can bring a player closer to one. And with selectors looking for greater depth, there may be no better time to make a case.
