Pakistan captain Fatima Sana fined 10% for gesture following Shafali Verma’s dismissal in Women’s Asia Cup match

Pakistan women’s cricket team captain Fatima Sana has been fined 10 per cent of her match fee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 Group A match against India in Dubai on Saturday.

Fatima breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers language, actions or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter after their dismissal during an international match.

The incident took place in the second over of India’s innings after Fatima dismissed opener Shafali Verma. The Pakistan captain gestured towards the pavilion following the dismissal.

The ICC has also added one demerit point to Fatima’s disciplinary record. It was her second offence within a 24-month period, taking her total to two demerit points.

Fatima had received her earlier demerit point during the first T20I of Pakistan’s series against Ireland in Dublin on August 6, 2025.

Fatima admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Supriya Rani Das of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. As a result, no formal hearing was required.

On-field umpires Nimali Perera and Shathira Jakir Jesy, third umpire Rokeya Sultana and fourth umpire Rabab Ahsan levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches under the ICC Code of Conduct carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

A player who reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period has the points converted into suspension points and can be banned. Two suspension points result in a ban from one Test, two ODIs or two T20Is, depending on which format comes first for the player.

Demerit points remain on a player’s disciplinary record for 24 months from the date they are imposed, after which they are expunged.
