India pacer Mohammed Shami was once again left out of the national squad as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced teams for the upcoming ODI and Test series against New Zealand on Friday.
The 36 year old last represented India in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand in March 2025, when he took nine wickets in five innings at an average of 25.88 to help the team win the tournament.
Shami last featured in domestic cricket in the Duleep Trophy 2026, where he took seven wickets in three matches for East Zone.
He also claimed 37 wickets in seven matches for Bengal during the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, at an average of 16.72. In his only appearance in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season, he returned figures of 4/30 and 1/29.
In the IPL, Shami took six wickets in nine matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2025 and 12 wickets in 13 matches for Lucknow Super Giants in 2026.
Meanwhile, Bengal pacer Akash Deep earned a place in the Test squad after missing nearly eight months of competitive cricket because of a lower-back injury. He last played a Test against England at The Oval in August 2025.
Anshul Kamboj, who featured in one Test during India's 2025 tour of England, also returned to the Test squad.
The selections come as India prepare for a five-match ODI series against New Zealand from November 4 to 15, followed by a two-match Test series beginning November 19.
The ODI squad will have a leadership change midway through the series, with Shubman Gill captaining the team for the first three matches before Shreyas Iyer takes over for the final two.
Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav feature in both ODI squads, while Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja are among the players named for the Test series.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, meanwhile, was named in India's T20I squad for the New Zealand series, marking a potential return to international cricket after a lengthy absence.
