New Sachin Tendulkar plan: BCCI backing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, doesn't want a 'one-year wonder'

The BCCI wants teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to build a career worthy of his extraordinary early promise, with the board keen to ensure the 15-year-old does not fade into a "one series or one year wonder".

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said on Thursday that the board is closely monitoring Sooryavanshi and other emerging players and is focused on giving them the right guidance and support to develop into long-term international stars, much like legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar.

"You see, the BCCI can be proud that we are promoting a player of the age of 15 years who is already making his mark in the international scenario and we are very cautious that every right step he should take forward so that it should not be a one series or one year wonder. We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve like Sachin Tendulkar did for the country or other players who in the past became legends so we look at Vaibhav in a very serious manner. He's monitored from every angle and every step he is taking forward in his international career. The BCCI is taking a very close look at his future," Saikia said.

The remarks came after a BCCI review meeting at the board's headquarters in Mumbai, attended by Saikia, India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman and other senior officials.

Sooryavanshi has already put together a remarkable record at an age when most players are still making their way through junior cricket.

At 15 years and 157 days, he recently became the youngest player to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy history, breaking a record that had stood for 57 years.

He also made a major impact on India's tour of Zimbabwe, scoring 151 runs in three matches and claiming his maiden Player of the Series award as India completed a 3-0 clean sweep.

His rise to the senior international side came after a spectacular IPL 2026 campaign for Rajasthan Royals. Sooryavanshi amassed 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30, including a century and five fifties, finishing as the tournament's leading run-scorer and setting a record with 72 sixes.

The teenager also collected a haul of post-season honours, winning the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker and Super Sixes awards.

Earlier in the year, he had also starred at the ICC Men's Under-19 Cricket World Cup, scoring 439 runs and being named Player of the Tournament.

Sooryavanshi had already made history before his Zimbabwe exploits, becoming India's youngest-ever international debutant when he was handed his T20I debut against England.

With his rapid rise bringing enormous expectations, the BCCI's focus now appears to be on managing that trajectory carefully — ensuring the teenager's extraordinary start develops into the kind of sustained career that Saikia believes can eventually put him in the company of India's cricketing greats.
