2nd Test: Balanced pitch awaits India, SL at Colombo
The Sinhalese Sports Club pitch for the second Test is expected to be balanced. Officials are considering a well-balanced track to aid young batters. This approach avoids potential backfire from an overtly spin-friendly surface. Past SSC pitche...

The first Test, which India eventually won by 165 runs, ran its five-day course on a pitch that did not have any demons in it except natural wear and tear.
The Sri Lankan officials think that giving an overtly spin friendly pitch for the second Test, starting on August 23, might just backfire.
"At this moment, the thinking is for a well-balanced pitch like the one you saw at Galle. Sri Lanka are also without some experienced players like Chandi (Dinesh Chandimal), Kusal (Mendis) and (Pathum) Nissanka. So, we need to give our young batters a chance also," a SLC official told PTI.
"Of course, it all depends on what finally the team wants for the match, you know, something that gives them the best chance to win and draw the series," he added.
In the aughts, batters used to have a carnival at the SSC pitches and it was a mini fortress of the home side.
In the decade between 1999-2009, Sri Lanka played 12 Tests at this venue, winning six and drawing the rest.
The template was simple. Batters like Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene piled huge runs while a capable spin attack led by the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan strangled the opposition.
But once the iconic names retired, the pitch too changed its character.
In the next decade, Sri Lanka could only win three of the seven Tests played here, losing the remaining four.
In fact, twice they conceded a first-innings lead in excess of 400 to India and Pakistan.
Their victories came against sides that dished out poor cricket like South Africa (2018), Australia (2016) and Bangladesh (2025).
But teams like India (twice), England and Pakistan found the going easy against the hosts here post the legends' era.
A similar script may pan out here in the second Test, as team batting first might just hold all the aces.
