England kept chipping away wickets at crucial intervals against India, and the Men in Blue could only manage to post 229/9 on board on a two-paced pitch at the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday.

Captain Rohit Sharma's solid 87 (101) Suryakumar Yadav's 49 (47) were the only saving graces in a rather dismal performance from India's illustrious batting line-up.

After being asked to bat first, India made a shaky start losing two quick wickets in the space of one run.

Shubman Gill was the first to get out as he was castled by pacer Chris Woakes for nine. India were 26 for 1 then.

An even bigger shock was awaiting India as in-form Virat Kohli departed for a nine-ball duck, his first in ODIs this year.

Kohli tried to clear left-arm pacer David Willey over mid-off but all he could manage was a dolly to Ben Stokes, reducing the hosts to 27 for 2.

Shreyas Iyer soon followed the suit, clattering Woakes to Mark Wood at mid-on after making four.

For England, pacer David Willey grabbed three wickets, while Chris Woakes and spinner Adil Rashid bagged two wickets each.

Earlier, England won the toss and elected to bowl.
