'Completely unfair to RR': Cricket experts criticise IPL umpiring as Dinesh Karthik survives LBW call

Another controversial umpiring decision in the IPL 2024 sparked debate during the Eliminator match between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Wednesday. This season has experienced numerous dubious calls, fueling the ongoing discussion about the officiating standards in the tournament.

The incident occurred in the 15th over when RCB batter Dinesh Karthik was clearly trapped LBW by Avesh Khan. Karthik immediately opted for a review.

Karthik had attempted to play a shot across the line, but the ball hit his pad. UltraEdge showed a significant spike, suggesting possible contact, but it was difficult to determine if it was the bat hitting the pad or the ball hitting the inside edge.


Given the proximity of the ball to the inside edge and the possibility of deviation, the third umpire concluded that the bat was indeed involved.

However, RR mentor Kumar Sangakkara seemed doubtful. He quickly stood up from the dugout and went to the fourth umpire to seek further clarification.

Commentator Ravi Shastri also voiced his dissatisfaction over the umpire's call saying it was completely unfair to RR.

"Dinesh Karthik was clearly out. Completely unfair to RR here. Umpire should have checked the review 4-5 times before giving the decision," Shastri said on air.

Former England players Kevin Pietersen and Michael Vaughan lashed out at the decision emphasising these mistakes shouldn't happen at this level.
