DK Shivakumar, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday said Chinnaswamy Stadium will continue to host future IPL matches, clearing uncertainty over the venue following the June 4 stampede that occurred during celebrations of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s IPL 2025 win.

Assurance on hosting IPL in Bengaluru

Speaking after casting his vote in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) presidential elections, Shivakumar said a new, larger stadium will also be built in the future. He said, “I'm a cricket lover. We will ensure that the accident in Karnataka does not happen again and hold cricket events at Chinnaswamy Stadium in a manner that upholds the honour of Bengaluru.”

He added that the KSCA will run the stadium within legal norms and with adequate crowd-management measures.

Shivakumar reiterated that the state intends to retain the tournament. “We will not shift the IPL elsewhere and will continue to hold it here at Chinnaswamy Stadium. This is the pride of Bengaluru and Karnataka, which we will retain,” he said.

On women’s matches, he said the government would ensure opportunities for them as well.

Stampede during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's celebrations to mark their IPL 2025 triumph took a tragic turn on June 4 this year when 11 people lost their lives and more than 30 were injured in a stampede during the trophy parade outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Lakhs of people had converged at the stadium to celebrate RCB’s first-ever Indian Premier League title. The festivities soon turned tragic as police struggled to control the massive crowd, resulting in the fatal stampede.
