The Black Caps captain’s exceptional catch to dismiss Ravindra Jadeja in the 46th over was a highlight of the day, as he dived low to take a brilliant one-handed catch at backward point.
Jadeja, who was on 16 off 20, had attempted to cut a delivery but sent it into the air, only for Williamson to show his agility and precision, sending the Indian all-rounder packing. The catch quickly went viral on social media, capturing the brilliance of New Zealand's fielding prowess.
Earlier, New Zealand had already shown their fielding mettle, with Glenn Phillips’ sensational catch to dismiss Virat Kohli in his landmark 300th ODI.
The Indian fans were left in stunned silence as Phillips leaped high at point to claim an unbelievable catch, leaving Kohli and the crowd in awe. This moment, too, became an instant sensation online, further underlining New Zealand's dominance in the field.
But Shreyas Iyer (79 off 98 balls), Axar Patel (42 runs), and Hardik Pandya (45 runs off 45 balls) provided some much-needed stability. Their resilience helped India reach a total of 249, though it was largely thanks to Matt Henry’s devastating five-wicket haul that India didn’t push beyond that total.
In what was a challenging first innings, New Zealand's all-around fielding and bowling performances put them in a strong position.
Henry was the star with the ball, while Williamson's brilliance in the field ensured that the Black Caps continued to dominate. Despite the efforts of Iyer, Patel, and Pandya, India’s batting collapse in the face of such exceptional fielding left them with a total well below what they had hoped for.
