Vinesh Phogat disqualification case verdict: CAS to announce today whether Indian wrestler will get silver medal

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ad-hoc division will announce its decision on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal regarding her disqualification from the Olympic finals by 6pm local time (9:30 pm IST) on Saturday. The hearing, which concluded on Friday, addressed Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her removal from the finals due to being 100 grams overweight on the morning of the match against eventual gold medalist Sarah Ann Hildebrandt from the USA.

CAS stated, "By application of Article 18 of the CAS Arbitration Rules for the Olympic Games, the President of the CAS Ad Hoc Division has extended the deadline for the Panel's decision to 10 August 2024 at 18:00 Paris time."

The ad-hoc division, established for resolving disputes during the Olympics, noted that a decision is expected before the Paris Games conclude on Sunday.


Following the hearing, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) expressed hope for a "positive resolution."

"Indian Olympic Association remained hopeful of a positive resolution of wrestler Vinesh Phogat's application before the Ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her failed weigh-in," the IOA said in a statement on Friday.

In the final match, Vinesh Phogat was substituted by Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, whom she had defeated in the semifinals on Tuesday.

In her appeal, Vinesh Phogat is requesting that she be awarded a joint silver medal with Lopez, arguing that she was within the weight limit during her bouts on Tuesday.

Vinesh Phogat's case was presented by prominent senior lawyers Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania.
