The World No.3, who is also a four-time Grand Slam winner, Alcaraz, ended his 15-match win streak on Friday. He walked into this tournament as a silver medalist from the recently concluded Paris Olympics.
His defeat to Dutch Zandschulp also marks his earliest exit from a Grand Slam tournament since bowing out in the second round of Wimbledon in 2021 as a teenager. The Spanish tennis sensation had a 16-2 record at the U.S. Open, where he never had been eliminated before the quarterfinals in three previous appearances.
In Friday's game, the 21-year-old never found his rhythm against Netherlands' van de Zandschulp. Alcaraz was notably off his game, with repeated errors on shots that are typically routine for him. These issues culminated in a double fault, which put him behind significantly in the match.
Facing an insurmountable two-set deficit, Alcaraz chose to gather his belongings and leave the court.
