Throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Team India's bowling attack has struggled to shine, with the notable exception of Jasprit Bumrah, who is arguably the best bowler in the world right now. However, the rest of the bowling unit has failed to meet expectations. While there were flashes of brilliance from Mohammed Siraj, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Akash Deep, their efforts have fallen short of the consistency needed to claim 20 wickets in a Test match.

As the series stands delicately balanced at 1-1, the storied Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) presents yet another challenge for skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir: finding the perfect bowling combination to dismantle Australia's batting lineup.

Ahead of the Boxing Day Test, head coach Gambhir, captain Rohit and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were seen in deep discussion during a training session, as reported by TOI. Notably, pacer Prasidh Krishna impressed in the nets, troubling India’s top batters, while all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has shone with the bat but he has yet to prove his worth as a genuine fourth seamer.

While Australia’s batting hasn’t looked its best, Travis Head has been the standout performer, enjoying the form of his life. Meanwhile, the likes of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith remain dangerous and could turn the tide if allowed to settle.

The MCG pitch, expected to favor fast bowlers, adds complexity to India’s selection headache. Reports suggest India is considering an extra pacer, which could mean Prasidh Krishna might get a nod. However, all-rounder Reddy’s batting form in Australia could tilt the scales in his favor, given India's inconsistent middle order.

Spin, too is a tricky area for Team India. Ravindra Jadeja is a near-certainty after his heroic innings in Brisbane, but the question remains: should India bring in Washington Sundar as a second spinner, or stick to their pacers?

India’s batting woes add another layer of uncertainty. Virat Kohli’s lack of consistency and Rohit Sharma’s extended lean patch leave the top order vulnerable. Reddy’s inclusion could bolster the lineup, but that might come at the cost of a bowling option.

When asked about team selection, Rohit Sharma said, "I had a look at the pitch and it has quite a bit of grass covering," he said. "We're certainly considering the weather factor as well (a heat wave is predicted on Boxing Day). Whatever we have to do to make the best possible XI, we'll do that, whether it is playing an extra spinner or not. We'll see how much grass remains on the wicket, how much spinners will be used. This doesn't look like a dry wicket to me."

On handling the bowling unit, Rohit added, "It's a challenge to handle not just the bowling but the entire team," he said. "Nobody comes here not to perform. But when somebody is in form, we have to make the most of that. Bumrah is certainly making the most of it. Siraj and the others who are bowling around him know they need to step up. They're trying hard but have been a bit unlucky. Siraj has shown great attitude."

Rohit also lavished praises on Bumrah,"With him in this form, all that the other bowlers have to do is just maintain the pressure. He has crystal-clear ideas and keeps it simple. It makes it very easy for me as captain. It's nice to see that a lot of the opposition players talk about him. The impact he's had on the series is massive. Hopefully he'll continue to do that because these two games are very important for us."
