Can Ricky Ponting change the fortunes of Punjab Kings?
Ricky Ponting has been appointed as the new head coach of Punjab Kings, aiming to turn around the team's fortunes in the IPL. Ponting, who previously coached Delhi Capitals, brings extensive experience and a successful track record. His main chall...

Ponting served as the head coach of Delhi Capitals from 2018 to 2024. Under his leadership, Delhi reached the playoffs in three consecutive seasons and made it to the finals for the first time in 2020. However, they struggled to maintain that success, finishing fifth in 2022, ninth in 2023, and sixth in 2024.
Ponting's appointment as head coach of Punjab Kings surprised many, as various names, including Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, and Ashish Nehra, were circulating as potential candidates. Nevertheless, the Australian legend faces a significant challenge in this new role.
Over the years, Punjab Kings have shown promise but have yet to win the coveted IPL trophy. They reached the finals for the first time in 2014 but lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in Bangalore. Since then, they have not returned to the final of the world's richest and most-followed cricket league.

Ponting's first major challenge will be to find a balance within the team, which is crucial for achieving results under pressure in important matches.
There's no doubt that any team would welcome Ponting as a mentor or coach, as he is widely regarded as one of the best at nurturing talent and giving opportunities to young players. Under his guidance, Team India discovered two world-class talents and match-winners, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom reached new heights in their careers after playing for Delhi Capitals.
According to Cricbuzz, Ponting has a unique approach to mentoring young players; he often takes rookies out for breakfast, providing personal advice and guidance. The former Australian captain adopts a hands-on approach, always being the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave.
Every coach has a distinct style, and when things go well, complaints are rare. However, when results falter, criticism often follows. As noted in Cricbuzz, Ponting typically disconnects from cricket once the IPL season concludes. It will be interesting to see whether his coaching style and mentorship can bring about the much-needed change in the Kings' overall setup.
