Brazil vs Belgium: Each team bringing more stars than an Oscar night
For all Brazil’s attacking riches, Belgium’s biggest problem could be piercing a robust defence that has conceded just once, in their 1-1 opening draw with Switzerland.

On paper, a Belgium side containing the talents of Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku have the potential to cause a World Cup upset. But on Monday Belgium had to mount a fightback to beat Japan, with Nacer Chadli scoring the winner in the 94th minute. But coach Roberto Martinez sees it as a psychological advantage: “That was a test for the team and its character.” But mistakes such as the ones that allowed Japan to grab a two-goal lead are sure to be punished by a more creative Brazilian squad.
Neymar’s Back
Neymar signalled he had well and truly put a recent injury lay-off behind him with an incisive performance in a 2-0 win over Mexico, when he scored the opener and set up Roberto Firmino for the second. Even more is expected from Neymar, whose pace, technique and vision allied to Willian’s slick wide movement give Brazil a more direct dimension. But he can combine well with Coutinho for some Samba action as well.
Brazilian Rainforest
For all Brazil’s attacking riches, Belgium’s biggest problem could be piercing a robust defence that has conceded just once, in their 1-1 opening draw with Switzerland. Centre-back pairing Joao Miranda and Thiago Silva have been solid and despite Marcelo’s injury, the back four have not been stretched. Felipe Luiz, who got his chance with Marcelo out, has provided them a full-back who knows how to defend in tandem, a skill perfected at his club Atletico Madrid.
Pressure on Hazard
In the 2014 quarterfinal against Argentina, Eden Hazard was replaced after 75 ineffective minutes as they lost 0-1 to Argentina. Two years later, in the face of determined defending, he faded when it mattered most and drifted out of the game as Wales knocked them out of the Euros with a 3-1 shock. But he’s not short of confidence. I told him recently that he must thank God for the talent he has been given. He answered, ‘Maybe I should thank him a little’ DEMBA BA Former teammate on Eden Hazard
