With the Indian Premier League (IPL) to start soon, the Gujarat Titans have suffered a major blow as senior pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the tournament, owing to a left ankle injury, sources told ET Online on Thursday.

The World Cup star will be undergoing a surgery in the UK.

As per a PTI report, Shami was in London in the last week of January, seeking treatment. The special ankle injections have not worked and therefore, the only resort is surgery for the Arjuna awardee.

The development sheds bad light on the National Cricket Academy's (NCA) injury rehabilitation management programme.

With 24 wickets, Shami was a key player in India's incredible World Cup run. Despite his struggles with his landing, Shami played through pain and didn't let it stop him from giving it his all.

In his ten-year career, Shami, has amassed 229 Test, 195 ODI, and 24 T20 wickets.

It is now extremely unlikely that the fast bowling maestro will be able to return before India's home Test matches against New Zealand and Bangladesh in October and November. Another marquee tournament, ICC T20 World Cup, is also scheduled for June.

However, the highly anticipated away series against Australia might be his target.
