Bangladesh claims historic 10-wicket victory as Pakistan falls to 146 all out in 1st Test

Bangladesh overcame domestic political unrest to achieve a historic 10-wicket victory against Pakistan, which collapsed to 146 all out on the dramatic final day of the first Test on Sunday.

Off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz and left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan, a former lawmaker in Sheikh Hasina's government, shared seven wickets after the pace bowlers had dismantled Pakistan's top order. This win marks Bangladesh's first in 14 Test matches against Pakistan.

Openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam remained unbeaten on 15 and 9, respectively, as Bangladesh reached 30-0 by tea. This victory is Bangladesh’s seventh away Test win and its first since defeating New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in January 2022.


Pakistan, which had declared its first innings at 448-6, conceded a 117-run lead and was bowled out by a disciplined pace and spin attack. The team resumed on 23-1, still 94 runs behind.

Mohammad Rizwan, who had scored a career-best unbeaten 171 in the first innings, top-scored with 51. However, many of his teammates fell to rash shots and aggressive field placements by Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 4-21, Shakib Al Hasan 3-44, while fast bowlers Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, and Nahid Rana each claimed one wicket.

In a dramatic first session, Bangladesh set up its victory as Pakistan struggled to 108-6, losing five wickets. Captain Shan Masood (14) was dismissed in the second over of the day by Hasan, who had him caught behind. Masood protested, having previously disputed a similar decision in the first innings, but replays confirmed a faint edge.

Hasan missed a chance to dismiss Babar Azam for a pair of ducks when wicketkeeper Litton Das missed a simple catch. Babar, who had hit three boundaries, was eventually out to fast bowler Rana (1-30) for 22.

Pakistan’s middle-order batters faltered against the spinners, with Saud Shakeel dismissed for a duck while attempting an extravagant shot against Shakib. Abdullah Shafique also fell to an ambitious shot against Shakib, and Salman Ali Agha was out to Mehidy’s second over.

Bangladesh maintained its pressure after lunch, with Mehidy claiming three wickets. Rizwan was dismissed for 51, and No. 11 Mohammad Ali was out leg before wicket.

The defeat extends Pakistan's winless streak in home Test matches to five losses and four draws since their last victory against South Africa at Rawalpindi in 2021.

The second Test will be played at Rawalpindi from next Friday, having been relocated from Karachi due to ongoing construction at the National Bank Stadium.
