Ajay Jadeja defends Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s brilliance, slams Shubman Gill’s ‘lucky day’ comment

Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja did not hold back in criticizing Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill for what he felt was a dismissive comment on Rajasthan Royals' young star Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who recently created history in the IPL by scoring a blistering 101 off just 38 balls at the age of 14.

After the Royals effortlessly chased down a daunting 210-run target, largely due to Suryavanshi’s record-setting century, Gill, when asked about the innings, remarked, "It was his day.

His hitting was tremendous, and he made full use of it." While seemingly complimentary, the remark struck the wrong chord with Jadeja.

Not just a lucky day

Speaking on the post-match broadcast, a visibly annoyed Jadeja called out Gill for not giving the teenager due credit.

"A 14-year-old to have that much belief in himself… and then to say it was just a lucky day? That’s not giving enough credit,” Jadeja said.

He stressed that such a performance, especially under pressure at such a young age, demanded recognition for more than just timing or fortune.

Jadeja further praised Suryavanshi’s mindset, saying it was “the mindset that blows me away more than anything,” and hailed the support staff for allowing the youngster the freedom to flourish.

Historic innings, dismissive response

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s century wasn’t just impressive—it was historic. He became the youngest-ever centurion in both IPL and T20 history, smashing 11 sixes and 7 fours in an innings that left bowlers like Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj stunned.

His 166-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal was also the highest for Rajasthan Royals in IPL history.
