NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is monitoring three asteroids that will pass Earth today, October 9. While these asteroids pose no threat, their close approaches offer valuable opportunities for scientific research. The asteroids—2018 QE, 2024 TD3, and 2024 TK3—are part of NASA's efforts to track and study near-Earth objects.

Asteroid 2018 QE: A Bus-Sized Visitor

The first asteroid, 2018 QE, is about the size of a bus, measuring 32 feet wide. It will pass Earth at a distance of 415,000 kilometers, which is farther than the Moon’s distance from our planet. This close approach presents an excellent opportunity for scientists to study small celestial objects.

Asteroid 2024 TD3: An Airplane-Sized Space Rock

The second asteroid, 2024 TD3, is significantly larger at 99 feet wide. It will safely fly past Earth at a distance of 2,320,000 kilometers. Researchers aim to collect valuable observational data from this flyby, enhancing our understanding of such large space objects.

Asteroid 2024 TK3: A House-Sized Object

The third asteroid, 2024 TK3, measures 57 feet across, roughly the size of a house. It will pass Earth at a safe distance of 2,350,000 kilometers. Scientists plan to closely observe its characteristics during this approach, contributing to the broader knowledge of asteroids.

NASA’s continuous monitoring of these asteroids plays a critical role in ensuring Earth's safety. The data gathered from their flybys will help researchers learn more about the movement and composition of these celestial bodies. NASA's JPL remains dedicated to safeguarding our planet while expanding our knowledge of the universe.
