Plastic has infiltrated oceans drastically, WWF calls for action

Plastic has permeated all regions of the ocean, according to the WWF, which is asking for urgent steps to form an international treaty against plastics.

According to a WWF survey, 88 percent of marine species studied are harmed by serious plastic contamination in the water.

Many animals, particularly those regularly consumed by humans, have swallowed these plastics, according to the findings.

The paper, which was co-written with the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany, contains data from 2,590 scientific studies on the subject. It assesses the environmental impact of plastic and microplastic in the ocean.

In the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, massive "plastic islands" made up of floating fragments of plastic have been discovered.
