NRL ties up with IIT Guwahati campus for development of bio-degradable materials

GUWAHATI: Assam-based Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has tied up with Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) to set up ‘NRL Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Sustainable Materials’ for developing sustainable/bio-degradable materials from oil and bio refinery streams.

In a statement, NRL stated that the CoE is a first of its kind academic-industrial collaborative venture with the broad objective of developing sustainable materials from various waste and byproducts sourced from multiple sectors like petroleum industries bio-refineries and agro-industries.

NRL has extended an initial research grant of Rs 4 Crore through the CoE to the Chemical Engineering Department for the first project identified for ‘Development of Bio-Degradable Plastics from Refinery and Bio-Refinery Streams’. This project will facilitate pilot scale production of blown film grade poly (e-caprolecton) resin from bio-degradable waste products.


The company added, “NRL CoE will provide a huge boost towards development of green technology, utilization of waste and sustainable materials including bio degradable plastics on a commercial scale”.
