New York, Nov 11 (IANS) A team of astronomers using the powerful James Webb Space Telescope have discovered the most distant barred spiral galaxy similar to the Milky Way that has been observed to date.
On a momentous day, a young girl in Lucknow witnessed the USSR's inaugural satellite launch, setting the stage for an extraordinary journey into the depths of space. Fast forward to December 2022, and that young girl, now Dr. Hashima Hasan, stands at the forefront of NASA's groundbreaking discovery, unlocking the universe's enigmatic past.

Dr. Hasan, the Deputy Program Scientist of the James Webb Space Telescope and Education and Public Outreach Lead for Astrophysics, played a pivotal role in revealing unprecedented images of distant galaxies, reshaping our comprehension of the cosmos.

Her academic odyssey commenced at the University of Oxford, U.K., where she earned a doctorate in Theoretical Nuclear Physics in 1976. Dr. Hasan's trajectory involved post-doctoral research and teaching in nuclear physics and environmental science. Notably, her expertise at the Space Telescope Science Institute paved the way for her transition to NASA, where she addressed optical errors in the Hubble Space Telescope.

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Hasan shared a poignant moment from her sixth-grade class, where a teacher's assertion ignited her passion for science. Hailing from a scholarly family, with her uncle, Dr. Husain Zaheer, and aunt, Dr. Najama Zaheer, serving as stalwarts in science, she found inspiration and mentorship within her kin.

Her mother's unwavering support and the landmark Sputnik-1 launch solidified her commitment to science. Dr. Hasan initiated her research at the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) before venturing into NASA, leaving an indelible mark on nuclear physics.

Beyond her role in the James Webb Space Telescope, Dr. Hasan contributed significantly to NASA missions, including the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and Hubble Space Telescope. Her stellar achievements garnered accolades, such as the NASA HQ Exceptional Performance Award in 2008 and the National Research Council Resident Research Associate from 1981-1983.
