ISRO all set to launch students' satellite Kalamsat

Countdown begins
A 16-hour countdown began Wednesday for the launch of Kalamsat, a student payload, and imaging satellite Microsat-R, onboard India's Polar rocket PSLV C-44 from the spaceport of Sriharikota on Thursday.

Isro's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, in its 46th flight, would lift off from the first launch pad at the SDSC in Sriharikota, over 100 km from here.
PSLV-C44 is the first mission of PSLV-DL, a new variant of the 44.4 metre tall rocket equipped with two strap-on configuration, Isro said.

Student's satellite
The launch vehicle is the new version of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle while it will be moved to a higher circular orbit for establishing an orbital platform and carry out experiments. Kalamsat, which is the first student satellite from Isro, will be the first to use PS4 as orbital platform.
The Kalamsat would be the first to use the rocket's fourth stage as an orbital platform. According to Srimathy Kesan, Founder-CEO of Space Kidz India, Kalamsat will be the first satellite of Space Kidz India to be in a proper orbit as its earlier satellites were suborbital ones.

What is Kalamsat
"The Kalamsat is a 10cm cube nano-satellite weighing about 1.2kg. The telecommunication satellite's life span is about two months and its cost is about Rs 12 lakh," Kesan said.

What is Microsat R
DRDO's Microsat R will also be part of PSLV-C44 or PSLV-DL’s payload and while the Microsat R is an imaging satellite it will be used by the Defence Research and Development Organisation of India in its operations.
