While debris from the plane was found on various islands, including Madagascar and Réunion, the main wreckage remains missing. Some researchers now speculate that the plane might be located in a deep trench in the Indian Ocean.

6 Missing Flights Mysteries Other than MH370

The disappearance of MH370 is not an isolated incident. The history is replete with many such unsolved mysteries of missing flights.


EgyptAir Flight 804

On May 19, 2016, EgyptAir Flight 804, carrying 66 passengers from Paris to Cairo, plunged into the Mediterranean Sea, leaving investigators puzzled. Though the digital flight data and cockpit voice recorders were recovered, the mystery persisted. Initial speculation centered on terrorism, but France’s civil aviation bureau later concluded that a rapidly spreading fire in the cockpit caused the crash. Smoke was detected just before the plane disappeared from radar, and the aircraft took an unusual turn, indicating a descent to vent smoke. A subsequent investigation linked the crash to a pilot smoking in the cockpit and a leaking oxygen mask.

Flying Tiger Line Flight 739

On March 16, 1962, Flying Tiger Line Flight 739, carrying 93 U.S. Army Rangers on a secret mission, disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. After refueling in Guam, the plane never reached its next stop at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. Despite ideal weather and no distress signals, the plane vanished. An extensive search covered 144,000 square miles but turned up no clues. A nearby oil tanker reported seeing a midair explosion, leading some to suspect sabotage, though no conclusive evidence was ever found.

Pan Am Flight 7

In another unsolved mystery, Pan Am Flight 7 disappeared on November 9, 1957, halfway between San Francisco and Honolulu. Debris and 19 bodies were recovered days later, many wearing life vests, suggesting the plane had prepared for a crash. Elevated carbon monoxide levels in some of the bodies hinted at possible foul play, but no evidence of sabotage was ever found.

Canadian Pacific Airlines flight 1951

On July 21, 1951, a Canadian Pacific Airlines flight bound for Tokyo vanished in Alaskan airspace. Carrying 31 passengers and six crew members, the plane encountered poor weather but reported no issues. Despite months of searching, no wreckage was ever found.

Orient Airlines Flight 2501

Similarly, Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 2501 disappeared over Lake Michigan on June 23, 1950, during a storm. Though oil slicks and some debris were found, the plane itself remains missing. Decades of searches, including recent sonar scans, have yet to locate the aircraft.

British South American Airways flights

The Bermuda Triangle has claimed its share of aviation mysteries, including the disappearance of two British South American Airways flights—the Star Ariel in 1949 and the Star Tiger in 1948. Both planes vanished without a trace, despite favorable weather conditions and normal radio communication. To this day, these disappearances remain unexplained.
