Why is it the longest?
NASA stated that the Cold Moon, also known as the Long Night Moon, is the longest full moon of the year during the winter solstice, according to Live Science. When the sun, earth, and moon line up on an imaginary 180-degree circle, the full moon happens. During this alignment, the moon's orbit, which is slightly off Earth's orbit, causes it to be higher or lower than Earth's shadow, allowing sunlight to shine on the side of the moon that faces Earth.

Story behind the name
The Farmer's Almanack claims that the Mohawk people's custom gave December's full moon its common name, the Cold Moon. The name alludes to December's icy weather as winter's grasp tightens around the Northern Hemisphere. According to NASA, it is also referred to as the Frost Moon and the Winter Moon.
