The British Astronomical Association has observed that the comet, named 12P/Pons-Brooks, has become significantly brighter due to the reflection of light from its gas cloud. This cryovolcanic comet, measuring 18.6 miles in diameter, is comparable in size to a small city. However, despite its intimidating appearance, there is no immediate danger of a catastrophic collision with Earth.
This celestial interloper follows a 71-year orbit around the sun. Fortunately, the comet will not approach our planet until 2024, when it will be visible without the need for specialized equipment. Teddy Kareta, a postdoctoral researcher at Lowell Observatory, noted that while the comet is large and uncommon, it will remain at a safe distance of one-and-a-half astronomical units away. Its brightness can be attributed to its inherent luminosity rather than its proximity, making it potentially visible to the naked eye or through binoculars.
The intriguing "horns" on the comet's structure are formed by gas and dust tails released during unexplained explosive outbursts. Scientists have witnessed two such eruptions this year, with the first occurring in July and another more recently. Despite these peculiar phenomena, experts assure that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
The scientific community continues to study this extraordinary celestial visitor, eager to unravel its mysteries and gain further understanding of our vast universe.
