ZPM's Laltluangkima elected Mizoram's lone Rajya Sabha member

Guwahati: Ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) leader K. Laltluangkima was on Thursday elected as Mizoram's lone Rajya Sabha member.

He defeated Mizo National Front (MNF) candidate Zothansangi Hmar by 16 votes in the election held in the state Assembly.

The ZPM spokesperson secured 26 of the 36 votes cast and will succeed outgoing MNF Rajya Sabha MP K. Vanlalvena in the Upper House of Parliament.


Two BJP MLAs and one Congress legislator abstained from voting, while ZPM MLA W. Chhuanawma could not cast his vote due to prolonged illness.

Laltluangkima is the official spokesperson of the ruling ZPM.

Returning Officer Zothansanga Ralte said the election was conducted in accordance with the Election Commission of India's notification dated June 1, 2026, to fill the Rajya Sabha seat falling vacant upon the retirement of the incumbent member on July 19, 2026.

The polling for the biennial election to the Council of States was held on June 18 in the Committee Room of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly in Aizawl from 9 am to 4 pm under the supervision of the Election Commission-appointed observer, the Returning Officer, and the Assistant Returning Officer.

According to an official statement, polling was conducted peacefully and recorded a voter turnout of 90%.

Counting of votes commenced at 5 pm on the same day in the Conference Hall of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly Secretariat in Aizawl.

After the completion of counting, Khiangte Laltluangkima, sponsored by the Zoram People's Movement, was declared elected to the Council of States from Mizoram, the statement said.
