Zaroo a week's acquaintance, witness to court

Prosecution witness in the Rahul Mahajan drug case says he knew the co-accused for just 15-20 days.

NEW DELHI: A prosecution witness in the Rahul Mahajan drug abuse case on Monday told a Delhi court that he had known Sahil Zaroo, a co-accused, for 15-20 days prior to the incident in June last year.

Rahul Mahajan, son of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, along with five others are being tried under various provisions of the NDPS Act after an overnight drug party at his father's residence here had resulted in the death of senior Mahajan's secretary Vivek Moitra.

Deposing as a prosecution witness, Trishay Khanna, who was present at the party, denied that he had known Zaroo much before the incident.

"He (Zaroo) was not known to me for more than 15-20 days before the incident," the witness said.

"I got a call from Zaroo on June one, 2006 (date of incident) before the party. I have also taken Zaroo to a hospital in East of Kailash after the late night party," he said, recording his statement before the court of Additional Sessions Judge S N Gupta.

During his cross-examination, Khanna denied that he had earlier met Zaroo at 'Calypso' bar at Hauz Khas here.

His testimony gains importance as the prosecution is trying to establish link between Zaroo and Mahajan claiming it was the former who used to supply drugs to slain BJP leader's son.

A court had framed charges against Mahajan's son for allegedly purchasing drugs for personal consumption.

Sahil Zaroo, two Nigerian nationals Abdul Lateef Ashola Md Abdullah and Egbedokun James Taiwo along with Harish Sharma, a close aide of late Pramod Mahajan, and Ganesh Sinha are facing trial under various sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the IPC in the case.
