Zardari's sister elected from Bhutto's parliamentary seat

Pakistan People's Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari's sister Faryal Talpur was on Saturday elected unopposed from the parliamentary constituency of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People's Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari's sister Faryal Talpur was on Saturday elected unopposed from the parliamentary constituency of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto.

Returning officer Jan Mohammad Kalhoro declared Talpur elected from the National Assembly seat in Larkana after the withdrawal of her rival candidates from the contest.

Former PPP chairperson Bhutto was elected to the lower house of parliament from this seat four times between 1987 and 1997.

PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari congratulated his aunt on being elected.

A statement issued by Zardari House here said Talpur had taken over the constituency in the name of Bhutto and it would "remain with her as a trust for" Bilawal, "who is the political heir to his mother".

Talpur is also the guardian of Bhutto's children in keeping with the slain leader's will.

Following Bhutto's assassination in December last year, polling was not held in the constituency in Larkana during the February 18 general election.

A large number of PPP workers in Larkana, Kamber-Shahdadkot, Ratodero and Naudero organised processions and distributed sweets among people to celebrate Talpur's victory.
