Zardari-Gilani review govt functioning, Cabinet to be expanded

Pakistan's Cabinet will be expanded with the induction of new ministers in place of the nine PML-N members who had resigned over the issue of the reinstatement of deposed judges before their party pulled out of the government last month.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Cabinet will be expanded with the induction of new ministers in place of the nine PML-N members who had resigned over the issue of the reinstatement of deposed judges before their party pulled out of the government last month.

This was decided on Wednesday during a meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani during which the functioning of the PPP-led government was reviewed.

The two leaders decided to accept soon the resignations of the PML-N ministers who had quit the Cabinet on May 12 over the government's failure to reinstate all the judges sacked by former President Pervez Musharraf during last year's emergency rule, official sources said.

During the meeting held at the Presidential palace, they decided to expand the federal Cabinet to fill the slots vacated by the nine PML-N ministers. The expansion of the Cabinet and reshuffling of certain ministries is likely to be done this week and a formal announcement would be made in the next few days, they said.

Gilani had not accepted the resignations of PML-N ministers so far as the PPP had been trying to get the party rejoin the Cabinet. With PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif turning down Zardari's request to return to the coalition, the PPP has now decided to accept the resignations.

The Prime Minister briefed Zardari on key issues facing the government. They also discussed the economy, situation in the troubled tribal areas and the need to fight terrorism and extremism.
